Genocide, Ethnocide, and ecocide. This is what the indigenous people of West Papua have been forced to endure for decades whilst living under Indonesian colonial rule. West Papua (alongside PNG) is home to the world’s third largest rainforest. The New Guinea rainforest is a carbon sink of old growth forest. It’s really important. Not like any forest. There’s only two sources of old growth forest in the world. The Amazon rainforest. And the New Guinea rainforest. The fight for self-determination is inseparable from the fight to protect our forests. Likewise, we cannot protect our rivers and our sago groves if we do not control our own future. We cannot save our people from displacement, militarisation and environmental destruction unless we have the power to govern ourselves. And that is exactly what I bought up during this climate in crisis Roundtable. I made sure to mention our @boycottforwestpapua campaign as well as the #GREENSTATEVISION

I have nothing but love and respect for @billieeilish and her family. Their team has always been so kind to me and are always keen to make space for West Papua to be included in their productions. Of course as a messenger of my people I will always do my absolute best to represent our nation’s aspirations for freedom as well as climate justice. The bird of paradise headdress I wear serves as a reminder of the beauty of our land and culture. Because activism is not just about resisting what’s wrong. But protecting what is beautiful.

I absolutely cannot wait for this Roundtable to drop! Wa wa waa. PAPUA MERDEKA!
