AOTEAROA AUCKLAND, New Zealand 1/12/2025
This Monday on what should have been the 64th Anniversary of West Papua’s Independence, we encourage everyone who has the freedom to do so, to raise the Morning Star Flag in solidarity with our Pacific whānau in West Papua.
Whether it’s drawing or printing an image of the flag to display or wear, featuring it in your profile picture or background, or sharing our Oceania Interrupted images that feature the flag, please raise it visibly and proudly in support of a Free West Papua.
This act of visibility is still unsafe for many West Papuans in their own homeland. It is also unsafe for many who work, study, or live abroad and wish to return home to reunite with loved ones. Your support continues to matter.
If you are in Tāmaki Makaurau, you are warmly invited to join Oceania Interrupted and West Papua Action Tāmaki Makaurau today from 6pm at Westhaven Marina, our usual gathering place on December 1st, where we raise the Morning Star Flag together in a circle of collective solidarity.
The situation in West Papua has worsened this year. New Indonesian coloniser laws now require foreign journalists to obtain police permission before reporting in certain areas. According to the Global Press Journal, this rule is likely intended to limit access to occupied West Papua, where communities continue to face systemic discrimination and human rights abuses. These same police institutions have also been responsible for most attacks on local journalists in Indonesia in recent years.
Our freedom to raise the Morning Star Flag is a privilege, and speaking out is a responsibility. Let’s stand together for justice and dignity in West Papua, and in all places where people’s voices and freedoms continue to be suppressed ❤️✊☀️✊.
