Last Tuesday – We remember Bersih 2 on 9th July 2011 — a movement to topple the government that was designed and instilled by the British when they colonized Malay Land (Semang, Senoi & Malay Aborigine).
(Malaya and Malaysia used to be called with Malay Land before colonisation)
In Malaysia, the Bersih movement (demand for free and fair election) was a series of 5 peaceful demonstrations.
Bersih1 (Nov 2007),
Bersih2 (July 2011)
Bersih3 (April 2012)
Bersih4 (Occupy Federation Square from 29th to 31st August 2015)
and finally, Bersih5 (Nov 2016) succeeded in culminating the historic downfall of a 60-year-old regime.
The struggle for liberation is an unbroken continuum, weaving together the courage and determination of freedom fighters across cultures and nations. Denying this interconnected reality is as disgraceful as erasing the important role of youths in this fight for liberation, be it on Aboriginal lands or in Palestine.
Recent years have borne witness to the rise of young voices, dismantling oppressive regimes and envisioning societies free from colonialism.
The Arab Spring of 2010 ignited in Tunisia, sparked by Mohamed Bouazizi’s self-immolation in protest, igniting a revolutionary fire that spread all throughout Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Libya, and Bahrain where young people took to the streets.
Since mid-June 2024, young people in Kenya rebelled and fought against the controversial tax increase in #rejectfinalbill2024 & #rutomustgo. Despite 39 lives that were lost by the brutal authorities, young people in Kenya are still protesting on the streets.
In Naarm, the community has consistently taken to the streets peacefully every Sunday since Oct 7, 2023 in Palestine and look upon the young people who are the main characters of the movement to raise and maintain the momentum for people to take to the streets.
The youths are not just catalysts but the bedrock of movements striving for collective liberation worldwide. Their unwavering commitment underscores that the struggle for freedom and justice transcends borders and generations, ensuring that their voices echo through history’s halls of change.
