Theys Hiyo Eluay who was assassinated by Indonesian Army Special Forces (Kopassus) on November 10, 2001

Today is the 19th death anniversary of West Papuan independence movement leader Theys Eluay who was assassinated by Indonesian Army Special Forces (Kopassus) on November 10, 2001. The Special Autonomy (Otsus) was passed as a law in that same month. This is the same law that is currently being pushed to be extended for a second phase by the Indonesian Government despite protests from the West Papuan people.

Theys Eluay’s death day coincides with the global commemoration of Indigenous Peoples Heroes Day. We remember Theys Eluay, Arnold Ap, and many West Papuan freedom fighters and advocates who have come before and fought for West Papua’s self-determination. We also recognize and pay tribute to West Papua’s new generation who continue the struggle today.

Long live West Papua’s heroes! Long live the struggle for self-determination!
